LEWISTON — The city’s public schools open for the fall term on Wednesday, Aug. 29, and Lewiston police warn motorists to be cautious about bus and pedestrian traffic during school commuting hours.

Commuting routes that may run past schools and school crossing guides include Old Greene Road, North Temple Street, Farwell Street, Lincoln Street (at the park near Cedar Street) and the downtown intersection of Bartlett and Birch streets.

Motorists are also warned about the new traffic pattern on Central Avenue near the Lewiston Middle School. There, angled parking spaces were added in front of the Armory building, and Vale Street is now one-way entering from Sabattus Street. Police suggest that commuting motorists may want to opt for a different travel route and parents dropping off children will need to adjust to these changes.

Police urge motorists to use extreme caution in this area and to reduce speed. Be alert for parked cars that may be opening doors, and for vehicles attempting to back out of the angled spaces.

School zones are marked by flashing amber lights that are activated when children are arriving and leaving schools. Motorists must stop for school buses that have activated flashing red lights while loading and unloading children.
