Lewiston bands will furnish music. All railroads give reduced rates.

Shoe workers in Auburn and Lewiston manufacturing women’s cement-process conventional shoes earned an average of $1.66 an hour in April of 1962, according to Wendell D. Macdonald, regional director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Men averaged $1.83 and women $1.55 an hour. Among occupations studied, average hourly earnings of men ranged from $2,43 for pullover-machine operators to $1,21 for janitors. Machine cutters averaged $2.28, side lasters $2.25, edge setters $1.97, and inspectors $1.30 an hour.

The expansion projects of two city hospitals were among six approved Monday by state officials. At Central Maine Medical Center, the $19.3 million expansion project will include a four-story addition and renovation encompassing about 55,500 square feet in 17 departments. At St. Mary’s Hospital, their $6.3 million project entails enlarging the emergency room and adding six additional operating rooms.
