GORHAM — Freshman Michaela George scored two goals, while sophomore Peyton Dostie notched the eventual game-winner as the University of Southern Maine field hockey team opened the season with a 4-2 win over Wheaton College in the first game of the USM Invitational at Hannaford Field on Saturday.
Junior forward Ariel Kaplan added a goal.
George scored her first collegiate goal on an unassisted strike off of a loose ball during a penalty corner in the 13th minute. Kaplan followed with her first goal of the season off of an assist from junior captain Natalie Harkins in the 24th minute.
Dostie registered her first collegiate goal in the 30th minute to give the Huskies a commanding 3-0 lead headed into the break.
Central Michigan 1, Maine 0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Erin Dye took control of a rebound and scored for the first and only goal of the afternoon as Central Michigan grabbed a 1-0 win over the University of Maine in field hockey action Saturday.
Central Michigan (3-1) scored off a penalty corner 26:23 into the first half. Cayliegh Immelman’s shot off the corner was saved by Maine goalkeeper Alicia Frisch. But Dye was able to collect the ball and convert it for a goal.
The Black Bears (1-3) had their chances to tie things up, including holding an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. But, they could not find the back of the cage.
Elke Jacobse, Katie Bingle and Zoe Adkins each recorded shots on goal for the Black Bears.
Men’s soccer
Coast Guard 3, USM 0
GORHAM — Midfielder Walter Heaney produced a pair of goals to lead Coast Guard Academy to a 3-0 shutout victory over the University of Southern Maine in men’s soccer action at Hannaford Field on Saturday.
Greg Kennerley scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick to put the Coast Guard up 1-0 at the 10:57 mark of the first half.
The Huskies (0-2) were seriously outplayed as the Coast Guard took a 20-3 margin in shots over the span of 90 minutes.
Southern Maine goalies Korey Mulherin and Jeremy Turner shared keeper duties, combining for seven saves. Goalie Richie Burns earned the shutout win in net for the Coast Guard without a single save.
