David Lawrence of Lisbon donates blood with the help of collection specialist Brittany Smith of Old Orchard Beach during the Red Cross blood drive at L-A Harley Davidson in Lewiston on Saturday. “We are trying to collect 150 pints today,” said Pete Morrison, donor recruitment manager for the American Red Cross. That amount would cover a typical weekend in Maine, Morrison said. L-A Harley holds an annual blood drive each January, but when shop owner John Story heard about the short summer supplies, he offered to hold a second drive. The blood drive was held in honor of Rachel Miller, a student at the University of Southern Maine, who has received 298 transfusions because of a rare blood disorder, familial erythrophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, known as FEL.
