FARMINGTON — Ivan L. Howard Jr., 74, died on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Orchard Park Nursing Home.

He was born June 13, 1938, in Farmington, the first child of six children to Ivan L. and Lillian Wyman Howard. He attended Farmington schools, graduating from Farmington High School, Class of 1957. He served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, N.C.

On Jan. 3, 1959, he married the love of his life, Jean Smedberg of Wilton, at the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church in Farmington. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009.

Most of his working years were spent running his own business, the NAPA Auto Parts Store in Jay. In later years, he was a salesman for Nickerson’s Buick Olds, and Tuttle’s auto sales. He also worked for a time as a clerk at Trask Jewelers in Farmington.

Ivan Jr. enjoyed working around his home and serving his community. He especially liked watching the Red Sox and attending Mt. Blue High School sporting events. He was proud to be an original member of the Fairbanks Union Church, where he was a greeter and offered collection. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Kora Temple Shrine and volunteered for several years at the Franklin Memorial Hospital.

One of his most noted accomplishments was being a member of Maine Lodge 20 in Farmington. He had been a member of this lodge for the past 32 years, most recently being a past master, and worked for many years organizing and running the local CHIPS program.

He is survived by three sons, Kurt Howard and his wife, Laurie, of Lewiston, Brent Howard of Las Vegas, Nev., and Aaron Howard of Farmington; his sister, Shelba Jean Howard of Lady Lake, Fla.; his brother, Denis Howard and his wife, Linda, of Belfast: his neighbor and sister in-law, Roberta Howard of Farmington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean, July 28, 2009; his parents, Ivan and Lillian Wyman Howard Sr.; his brothers, Larry, Douglas and Blaine Howard; his infant sister, Nancy; and a nephew, Troy Howard.
