DIXFIELD — The Dirigo High School field hockey team will honor former player Danielle “Dani” Ranger with a memorial plaque whenever the team plays on the home field.

High school Principal Michael Poulin said discussions with the team’s coaches and players have resulted in a decision to erect a brass plaque, attached to a stake, at the Harlow Park field whenever a field hockey game is played.

Ranger, an avid field hockey player at the school and a resident of Dixfield, died in an automobile accident last year at age 16.

The plaque will be placed in the ground at the beginning of each game and removed after the game. Harlow Park is owned by the town.

Selectmen, when discussing it last week, said they were concerned that installing a permanent plaque might set a precedent. Also, they were concerned that the plaque would be obscured during a game.

At the end of the season, Poulin said the memorial plaque will be put on display in the high school.

He said decisions have not yet been made on the precise location in the field the plaque will be installed, or whether or when an official dedication ceremony will take place.

The field hockey team named Ranger an honorary captain at the beginning of this season. The other captains are Lexi Noyes and Katelin Bonney, who are seniors.
