LIVERMORE FALLS — Town Manager Kristal Flagg plans to go to the town’s four cemeteries to check on what wartime veterans’ gravestones may need cleaning.

Flagg told selectmen Tuesday night that she checked the state law and towns are responsible for wartime veterans’ graves. The town is also responsible for maintaining its cemeteries where veterans are buried, including the fences around it and mowing the lawn, she said.

The town is responsible for Richardson, Shuy Yard, Haines Corner and Campground cemeteries.

Flagg also reported to selectmen that the Shuy Yard sign at the graveyard on Hinkley Hill off Park Street is missing. The flag is also gone.

She will check on the price for a new sign and a flag to be placed there, she said. She also is trying to find out what happened to the sign.

Flagg also reported that the town has a road ordinance that restricts heavy trucks on roads not built to hold them. Residents of Heritage Lane, which is part of a subdivision, complained previously about heavy trucks traveling over the road.

The ordinance is designed for selectmen to protect residents and town property, including roads, she said. The ordinance has exceptions, including for home heating fuel trucks and school buses.

A permit could be granted from the town for a truck of more than 23,000 pounds to travel over the roads.

The highway crew is currently working on Heritage Lane to prepare it and Legendary Lane for paving.

After the work is done, selectmen could order a sign prohibiting trucks weighing more than 23,000 pounds from using it, Flagg said. The town’s snow removal vehicles and emergency vehicles would be able to travel on the road.

Public works foreman Bill Nichols told the board that the crew had to take three to four feet off a section of Heritage Lane. The section heaves in the winter and makes it difficult for plowing.

The crew discovered that whoever built the subdivision road had filled in the area with boulders and stumps, which was causing the road to shift.

They have built the section so it now has a good base, he said. The extra work was not expected, he said.
