AUBURN — Saying she’s hearing “horror stories” and complaints from parents about the Auburn Middle School, School Committee member Bonnie Hayes asked that a workshop be scheduled to talk about the school.
“Why are some of us hearing complaints about the middle school, and what is (the school’s) philosophy that’s causing some parents to be dissatisfied?” Hayes asked Wednesday night during the Auburn School Committee meeting. Some parents have told her they’re unhappy with the school and have taken their children out of the district, Hayes said.
She has no intention of having a witch hunt against middle school staff, but she wanted to know the school’s philosophy on addressing “hormone-driven children or whatever you want to call it,” Hayes said. If there are good things happening at the middle school, she wants to hear it, Hayes said.
Superintendent Katy Grondin said parents should go through a chain of command when they call Hayes or any School Committee member.
Grondin asked Hayes to send her the concerns. “If I know what the concerns are, then I can frame how we address those concerns,” Grondin said. Hayes responded, “Do a workshop on the middle school and let’s see what happens.”
The workshop will be scheduled after the Sept. 19 meeting, committee Chairman Tom Kendall said.
