JAY — Selectmen voted unanimously to allow the police chief to use $3,717 out his capital reserve fund to buy three computers from an Augusta company.

The Police Department needs quicker processing computers to connect with Somerset County.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Communications Center is in the process of changing to the Information Management Services Inc. program, a computer-aided dispatch service and record-keeping system run through Somerset County.

Jay police have had the IMS service for several years but need to upgrade its computers and software to faster speeds to be compatible to connect with Somerset, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

The existing computers are at least five years old, White told selectmen.

The computers approved are two Hewlett Packard desktops and an HP laptop.

In other business, selectmen re-appointed Abby Pasquale to a five-year term on the Board of Assessment Review.

Selectmen Chairman Steve McCourt also informed the public that the Town Office will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 26, so that office workers can attend an election class.

McCourt said that office was short-handed during the summer and staff could not have attended earlier classes.

In another matter, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said that the chairs used by the selectmen and Planning Board members are falling apart.

The chairs were purchased several years ago prior to the Town Office moving to the current office on Main Street in July 2008.

McCourt said that they could continue to use the chairs for now.
