LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Armory on Sept. 6 were: first place, Jeanne Collette 2 player table; second place, Linda Williams and Val Asselin; third place, Louise Carey and Bob Oliver; fourth place, Connie St. Pierre and Kathy Bernier; fifth place, Sue Fisher and Gerry Therrien.

Shaker mat, rug workshop

NEW GLOUCESTER — Shaker sisters had a large scale industry known collectively as the fancy goods trade. Part of that production was the making of shag mats and rugs using weaving and knitting skills. Learn the same technique at a workshop to be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26. Fee, $35. Preregistration required. The next monthly guided nature hikes at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Highlights of the hike will be the early fall foliage in the Shaker Woods and the Old County Road as well as Loon’s Point and Aurelia’s Cascade. Maple Ridge annual meeting

HEBRON — The 2012 annual meeting of the Maple Ridge Cemetery Association of Hebron will be held a 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at 78 Greenwood Mountain Road.

Republicans plan barbecue

TURNER — The Androscoggin County Republicans and friends will hold a family barbecue from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at The Great Outdoors, 68 Naiad Lane.

The featured speaker is John A. Ford, Maine humorist and author of “Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good.” Guest speakers will also include candidates from all over Androscoggin County.

The theme for the event is “The Constitution.” The Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1787, so 2012 marks the 225th anniversary.

Irish, ceili dance classes at EL

AUBURN — Irish set and ceili dance classes will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Monday starting Sept. 17 at Edward Little High School, Room 101.

Irish social dances combine elements of old-fashion bar dances, contra and square dancing done to reel, jig and polka tunes. It is lively dancing done in groups of two to eight people. No dance experience or partner is necessary. The steps are simple and can be learned in one class.

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult & Community Education day and evening classes begin Sept. 17.

A 180-hour Certified Nursing Assistant course will provide students with the skills and experience to be Maine state certified. Candidates must be dedicated, hard working, reliable and compassionate with an interest in a health care career.

Day and evening classes are available. Prerequisite includes high school diploma or GED. The student must produce documentation of a recent medical physical examination as well as the following vaccinations: Hep B, MMR, tetanus, chicken pox and TB.

Poland Historical society meeting

POLAND — The Poland Historical Society’s September meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the old school house at Poland corner, Route 26.

A open business meeting will be held to discuss and make decisions to change the dates of the monthly meeting through May and to discuss whether to keep the school house open one afternoon a month from October through May. Stroke, bone screening

AUBURN/LISBON FALLS — Residents living in and around the Auburn community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture.

St. Philip’s Catholic Church will host a Life Line Screening on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 2365 Turner Road, Auburn. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church will host a screening on Monday, Oct. 1, at 496 Lisbon St., Lisbon Falls.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of permanent disability. Eighty percent of stroke victims had no apparent warning signs prior to their stroke. Preventive ultrasound screenings can help avoid a stroke. Screenings are fast, non-invasive, painless, affordable and convenient.

A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women.

YWCA offering new art classes

LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will offer new art classes with Lynda Leonas. The fall/winter six-week session will begin Tuesday, Sept. 25. The six-week winter session will begin Tuesday, Nov. 6. Students may sign up for one or two sessions.

Leonas brings the Y’s new arts program serious instruction based upon her experience as a K-6 visual arts teacher in Lewiston and Auburn, and as the former owner/operator of studioELL Fine Arts Center in Lewiston.

Age groups 5-12 years old will produce individual works of art in two-dimensional illustration with pencil, charcoal, soft and oil pastels; painting in watercolors and acrylics; as well as works of art in three-dimensional sculpture with clay.

Ages 5-7 will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Ages 8-12 will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $50.

Legion seeks crafters for fair

SABATTUS — The Sabattus American Legion Auxiliary will hold their annual craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24.

Bookmaking for kids Sept. 21

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library will hold a free drop-in bookmaking workshop from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the Maggie Trafton program room. Children will have the opportunity to decorate a book cover and then learn how to sew a blank book for their personal use.

Heather Runnels and Gretchen Slover will help children create the books. The workshop is part of the library-wide Celebration of the Book.
