PARIS — A  Porter man who is in the Maine State Prison confessed Tuesday to burglarizing properties in his hometown in 2009 and 2010 and stealing a gun, a generator and drugs.

Michael Merritt, 35, of 46 Pendexter Road pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and one count of stealing drugs Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court. He was sentenced to four years with the Department of Corrections, pushing his expected release date to April 2017.

According to Assistant Distract Attorney Richard Beauchesne, Merritt stole a generator from a home in Porter on Dec. 22, 2009, and on Jan. 9, 2010, broke into another home and took a firearm. That theft was a Class B offense because he stole a firearm. Merritt is also accused of stealing Percocet, a prescription medication that is a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone.

Beauchesne said Maine State Police were made aware that Merritt stole the items when another man who was involved in the crime, and who was in possession of the gun and generator, confessed his involvement to police.
