In New Gloucester, gravel pit owner Charles Chandler and the pit’s operator, H.E. Sargent Co. of Stillwater, are applying to the state Department of Environmental Protection for a permit to expand the Chandler Gravel Pit from its current 34 acres to 231. A long-term arrangement with H.E. Sargent Company would, by the year 2025, excavate 2,784,000 cubic yards of gravel from the pit. The pit is located in the Groundwater Protection Overlay Zone, beneath which is located the town’s major aquifer.
