BUCKFIELD — A Lowell family reunion was held Aug. 19 for the descendants of John and Ruth Lowell, who had resided on North Hill Road in Buckfield. The event was hosted by a grandson, Elwood Lowell and his wife Gloria, at their home on North Hill.

A group of 70 gathered to enjoy the day with a potluck meal while renewing family connections and memories.

The two surviving children of John and Ruth were in attendance, Charlotte Lowell Warren of Buckfield and Howard Lowell of Auburn.

An auction of donated items was held. Among them was a colorful oil painting done by Helen Heikkinen of the back door of her grandparents’ old home featuring flowers, a clothesline and a cat. This popular item raised the most money.

Another item was a wall hanging made by Mary Lowell Ennis, granddaughter, that had actual photographs of John and Ruth, their seven children, plus their home, transferred onto a quilted wall hanging.

The bulk of the funds raised go to the upkeep of the Lowell Cemetery.

A baking contest was also held. Gram Lowell’s recipes were used and the tasting and judging were done by her two children and Charlotte’s husband, Walter. The entries were apple pies, biscuits and a molasses cake. The judges choice were biscuits, declared to taste the most like “Gram” used to make. Ruth Warren Johnson, a granddaughter, was the winner. Her prize was a hand-turned rolling pin inscribed with the year, made by Kevin Cooper, grandson.

Plans were made for the next reunion to be in 2014 at Rebecca Lowell’s home, also on North Hill.
