PARIS — If Town Manager Phil Tarr leaves, Town Clerk Elizabeth Knox will fill the post until selectmen hire a permanent replacement.
Selectmen voted Monday to have Knox step in as interim town manager, road commissioner and tax collector, all jobs currently assigned to the town manager. Town bookkeeper Marjorie Risica would serve as interim treasurer.
The positions would come “in the event the town manager vacates his position,” Selectman Robert Kirchherr said.
The board is set to discuss Tarr’s contract in an executive session Friday at 7 p.m. He and the board have been discussing a separation agreement in recent weeks.
At Monday’s meeting, Chairman Sam Elliot said selectmen had come to an agreement with Tarr, and that attorneys are reviewing it.
Knox asked selectmen if she and Risica could share the position if Tarr leaves. She said she had consulted with the Maine Municipal Association on doing so.
Kirchherr said it would be simpler to have one person in each position, but said Knox would be free to draw on the knowledge of other town office employees if necessary.
In June, selectmen voted not to extend Tarr’s contract. It is set to expire the first week of January, but selectmen and Tarr are discussing ending the contract sooner.
Next week, selectmen will discuss the 50 candidates who have applied to replace Tarr.
