AUBURN — Local resident, Sumner H. Peck, 94, died Sept. 11, at his home in Auburn.

Mr. Peck was born July 1, 1918, in Lewiston, to Sumner and Annie Peck. After graduating from Bowdoin College, he served in the 348th Engineer Combat Battalion of the U.S. Army, landing on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day and serving in the European campaign, until the end of World War II. Among other decorations and citations, Mr. Peck was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm for his service.

After the war, Mr. Peck returned to Lewiston-Auburn, where he lived with his wife, Evelyn Smith, had two children and worked for the B. Peck Real Estate Co., which was associated with what was then one of northern New England’s largest retailers, Peck’s Department Store. Mr. Peck was active in the Kiwanis Club and served for many years as treasurer of the United Baptist Church in Lewiston.

Following a long illness, his wife passed away in 1977. Several years later, Mr. Peck married Shirley Bouchles and they lived happily in Auburn, until her death in 1986.
