FARMINGTON —The University of Maine at Farmington is presenting a concert dedicated to the music and creative legacy of American composer John Cage. Part of the “A Tribute to John Cage” concert series, the event is being held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21,  at the Performance Space in the Emery Community Arts Center on the UMF campus.

There also will be a panel featuring Liz Phillips, Phil Carlsen, Nate Aldrich—three individuals who work across music, sound, and movement—who will discuss the sounds and ideas of John Cage earlier that day from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m., also at the Performance Space in Emery.

“A Tribute to John Cage” concert series is part of an international celebration of the centennial of the birth of John Cage, considered one of the most influential and controversial artists of the 20th century. The concert will present a broad range of this pioneering composer’s work spanning 50 years. The concert includes performances by Grammy-Award winning pianist Paul Sullivan, internationally recognized percussionist Gustavo Aguilar and the UMF Experimental Arts Ensemble, and the experimental music collective Les Trois Etoiles.

All events are free and open to the public. “A Tribute to John Cage” is co-sponsored by the University of Maine Intermedia MFA Program and the University of Maine at Farmington Department of Sound, Performance and Visual Inquiry. It is part of the UMF University Forum.
