HARTLAND — Robert B. Oakes, 74, of Newburgh, passed away, Friday, Sept. 14, at Sanfield Rehab and Living Center, after having battled Alzheimer’s disease for nearly 16 years.

He was born in Lewiston, July 29, 1938, a son of Harold and Dorothy Oakes, and received his education in Jay schools.

During his life, he enjoyed football, boxing, fishing, and race car driving, of which he enjoyed participating in, often bringing home trophies. Robert worked many years at Jerry’s Garage in Wilton and also worked at GH Bass and Co. in Wilton, and later was promoted to supervisor at the GH Bass plant in Bangor. He later worked at Eastern Fine Paper, where he was employed for nearly 15 years. He was known as a hard worker, dedicated, and loved by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Bonita of Newburgh; a daughter from a previous marriage, Deidre LaPlant and her husband, David of New Sharon; a son, Sgt. First Class Nicky Oakes and his wife, Becky and their son Christopher of Indiana; stepdaughters, Michelle and Ranae Quirion; two stepgrandchildren, Nathan Dyer and Tara Flanagan, all of Newburgh; a brother, Donald Oakes and his wife, Louise of Wilton; sisters, Leatrice Orr and her husband, Raymond of Farmington and Frances Beaulieu and her husband, Dicky of Norridgewock; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Russell; and two sisters, Shirley and Pauline.

The family would like to give special thanks for the excellent care and love given to Robert during his stay at Sanfield. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
