POLAND — RSU16 will hold a public celebration for its Maine Teacher of the Year, Shannon Shanning, from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Poland Community School.

Chapter to meet

LISBON FALLS — Pioneer Chapter 11, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 20, at the Ancient York Masonic Hall, Route 196.  

The chapter will honor grand representatives. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.  All members of the order are invited.

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library will present “A Look at Fall Books” from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. Readers are invited to drop in to preview and discuss with library staff members the line up of books to be published this fall.

Auburn Public Library staff members Debra Erickson, Suzanne Sullivan and Marty Gagnon will offer reading suggestions from the best of recently published and upcoming books.  

Readers are invited to bring their own to-read lists and recommendations to share. Fiction will be the focus from 3 to 4, with a look at nonfiction starting at 4. The afternoon will conclude with the “Trivia Triathlon,” a test of literary trivia knowledge, at 5 p.m.

Fight Back Festival

NEW GLOUCESTER — The Fight Back Festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Pineland Farms.

The festival includes 10-, 25- and 60-mile bike rides, a 5K and 10K run and a one-mile stroll and 5K walk.

Proceeds will benefit the Cancer Community Center in South Portland.

All participants will receive a complimentary barbecue, with the option to upgrade to lobster for $20.

More than 100 volunteers are needed for set-up, registration, course support, barbecue and lobster bake, break-down and clean-up.

Girl Scouts to meet

POLAND — Girl Scouts of Maine will host a parent information and registration meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Ricker Memorial Library, 1211 Maine St.

Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best.  Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Seniors lobster meal

AUBURN — The New Auburn Senior Citizens will host a lobster shore dinner at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at St. Louis Church basement hall. Other choices are fried haddock, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and lobster rolls. The meal is for members only.

A meeting was held on Sept. 5 with President Virginia Levasseur presiding. September birthdays were noted and small gifts given. New members welcomed were Gordon Smith, Carmen Smith, Anita Denis and Noella Longtin.

The 50/50 winner was Gordon Smith; pot of gold, Lillian Giasson, Doris Biron, Julie Labrie, Kay Bernard, Gordon Smith and Julie Bannister.

Cribbage winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Sept. 13 were: first, Doris Gosselin and Andrea Metayer; second, Sue Fisher and Ed Madden; third, Pat Records and Norm Bissonnette; fourth, Edith Chambers and Bob Allen; fifth, Monique Nadeau and Jeanne Collette.
