LIVERMORE FALLS — Town Manager Kristal Flagg reported to selectmen this week on her check of veterans’ graves and headstones in town cemeteries.

She found three Civil War veterans’ graves at Shuy Yard on Hinkley Hill on Route 133. The sign marking the yard as a burial ground had been taken down, as had the American flag, she told selectmen. The flag pole was rusted and needs to be sanded and painted.

The AMVETS in Jay donated a flag for Shuy Yard, she said, since a story appeared in a newspaper stating the town needed to buy a flag for the yard.

Flagg also learned that the woman who made the original sign took it down to repair it and a relative had called to tell her where the sign was, she said. Flagg told the relative that the town would be responsible for getting a new sign.

She found that the stones in the cemetery were in good condition.

Veterans stones in Haines Corner Cemetery on Route 133 need to be cleaned, Flagg said.

She said she plans to visit the remaining two town cemeteries in the near future to check out the condition of veterans’ gravestones.

On Tuesday, the town’s custodian hung the new flag at Shuy Yard. There are plans to sand and paint the pole, she said.
