TURNER —  On Friday, Sept. 21, students in the class, Exploring River Valley, at Leavitt Area High School are sponsoring the Amazing Agricultural Expo at Ricker Hill Orchards.

The Expo will feature 25 exhibitors who work in the broad field of agricultural and natural resources. Walt Whitcomb, commissioner of agriculture and conservation, will be in attendance.

Mary Briggs of Brigeen Farms and Sharon Hathaway, teacher at Leavitt, have collaborated closely to set up a learning activity featuring a broad range of careers available within the agricultural and natural resource industry.

Exhibitors include Farm Credit loan officers, farmers, a forester from the Maine Forest Service and many more. A number of student groups have accepted the invitation to attend this learning opportunity. A Leavitt ninth-grade adviser group will be attending to select follow-up speakers for their daily adviser time as they start the process of integrating high school courses and career plans; a Lewiston Middle School eighth-grade STEM group is coming to learn how technology is applied to agriculture and natural resources careers; Leavitt physics and chemistry students will be there to see how soil scientists and equipment designers apply the concepts studied in their classes.

The day’s events will start at 10 a.m. and culminate with a barbecue including Maine-grown foods such as beef from Caldwell Farms, Raye’s mustard and apple crisp from Ricker Hill Farm Stand.
