MINOT — Frank R. and Donna Berry of Minot celebrated 50 years of marriage with an afternoon surprise party given by their family at the Greenwood Mountain Inn in Hebron on July 29.

Friends and family from near and far gathered to celebrate this joyous occasion, including Mrs. Berry’s bridesmaid from Colorado, as well as her sister, brother-in-law and nephew from Texas. Anniversary greetings came from around the world with a message from Mr. Berry’s best man from Switzerland and from their former exchange student from Portugal.

Donna Berry, nee Klahn, originally of Shoreham, N.Y., and Frank Berry, originally of Auburn, were married on Aug. 4, 1962, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rocky Point, N.Y., on Long Island.

Mrs. Berry began her career as an elementary school teacher after graduating from the State of New York Teachers College in Oswego, as well as Teachers College at Columbia University, where she received a master’s degree. She taught fourth grade in the Port Jefferson School District and during the latter part of her career worked as a teacher at the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead, N.Y., educating school groups about the Indians native to Long Island, as well as early American life.

Mr. Berry came to Long Island, N.Y., after serving in the United States Army and graduating from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in botany. He began his career working at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the Meteorology Department, as well as at the Fire Island National Seashore in the Parks Service. After doing graduate work at both the University of Maine and Columbia University, he went on to earn a master’s degree in teaching at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. Thereafter, he taught high school biology for 30 years, spending the majority of his career teaching at Comsewogue High School in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. After retirement, Mr. Berry wanted to return to his home state of Maine and he and Mrs. Berry moved to Minot in 1996.

They are the proud parents of daughter Katy and son-in-law James of Minot, as well as daughter Charlotte and daughter-in-law Donna of New York. They are also the proud grandparents of Bradley, also of Minot. Mr. and Mrs. Berry are active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn.
