FARMINGTON – RSU 9 Director Claire Andrews will present an adult sexual misbehavior workshop Tuesday for school board members and the community.

The hourlong workshop will be held during the board’s meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Mt. Blue Middle School conference room where directors meet. The workshop is open to the public.

The district received a grant for staff members to take the training and to train others to detect signs of adult sexual misbehavior in schools, Andrews said Monday.

Superintendent Mike Cormier and Andrews were among those who took the training.

“We will be discussing the school community’s role in prevention and responsibility,” Andrews said.

She will go over what is appropriate behavior, what is borderline and what is inappropriate conduct whether a volunteer, a paid staff member or someone visiting the schools, she said.

“As the adults in the schools it is our job to make sure children are safe and this will help to give adults the tools they need to keep children safe,” Andrews said.

Andrews said she has been doing this type of training in the Catholic Church for a number of years.

Cormier said a video will be shown as part of the workshop.

The Seattle, Wash., public schools had taken the training with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Staff members there put together a series of workshops with staff around adult sexual misconduct in schools, preventions and management, he said.

The training was offered free and several people in RSU 9 took it, he said.

Administrators, food service workers and bus drivers have already had the training. It will be provided to the staff at district schools from October into 2013.

The training for staff takes two hours.

Cormier said he will be training staff at SAD 4 in the Guilford area on Oct. 5 in exchange for training that staff provided to RSU 9.
