LEWISTON/AUBURN — Several activities designed to promote breast health have been organized by an ad hoc committee comprised of Lewiston and Auburn community leaders and healthcare professionals from the Bennett Breast Care Center at Central Maine Medical Center.

Auburn-Lewiston United for Breast Cancer Awareness, a public awareness campaign set to begin in late September, includes the following:

Hearts of Hope,  Friday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Carriage House, 1119 Lisbon St., Lewiston. This charitable fund-raising event will be hosted by Carlene and Mitch Sperry. Tickets are $30 each. Call 754-0747 for tickets and more information.

Legion Riders Breakfast, Sunday, Sept. 30, at William J. Rogers American Legion Post 153, 71 South Main St., Auburn. The Legion will host a breakfast to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Call Dan St. Pierre at 782-1118 for more information.

Auburn-Lewiston Mayors Breast Cancer Awareness Month Joint Proclamation, Monday, Oct. 1, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Participants will meet at Fountain Park at the corner of Lincoln and Main streets. Community members, survivors and supporters will start a walking processional across Longley Bridge to Auburn Festival Plaza for a brief noontime ceremony.

Auburn-Lewiston residents and friends are encouraged to attend. A public luncheon will follow at Narals restaurant at 34 Court St., Auburn. The luncheon buffet, including drink and dessert, is specially priced $7.95. Reservations are strongly recommended. Call 344-3201 to reserve a seat. Late arrivals will be accommodated if available seating allows.

Pretty Pink Perennial Plant Exchange, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in the parking lot across from the Auburn Public Library on Court Street. The rain location is Grace Lutheran Church on Mount Auburn Avenue in Auburn. The Library Cafe will donate pink lemonade. Bettyann Sheats will host the event. American Legion Post 153 Auxiliary Vendor’s Day, Saturday, Oct. 6. A breast cancer awareness booth will be featured at this annual community event, which is free and open to the public. The Auxiliary will distribute free ribbon pins and provide pink refreshments.

A discussion on “Legal Issues in Health Care Decisions” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Naral’s restaurant community room. Joshua Klein-Golden, Androscoggin County probate judge, will discuss his personal connection with survivors of breast cancer, but will focus on the need for planning before health issues arise. He will discuss the importance of having a will, living will and power of attorney. He will also share information about guardianships and conservatorships. A question-and-answer session will follow his presentation. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The program will also be repeated at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Auburn Public Library’s Maggie Trafton Room. Doors open at 1 p.m. Space is limited at both sessions, so registration is encouraged. Call Tizz Crowley at 333-6600, ext. 1217, or email her at tcrowley@auburnmaine.gov.

National Metastatic Breast Cancer Day is Saturday, Oct. 13.

A Breast Cancer Awareness Forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Bridgton Hospital, Hospital Drive. Topics will include “ABCs of Breast Cancer” with nurse practitioner Kathi Varney from the Central Maine Medical Center Sam and Jennie Bennett Breast Care Center; “An Introduction to the Bennett Breast Center” with mammography technologist Sue Rossignol from the Bennett Center; and “Breast Nurse Navigation” with Christine Hayden, breast health outreach patient navigator at the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope at CMMC.

“Every Ribbon Tells a Story: A Man’s Prospective” will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the Maggie Trafton Room at the Auburn Public Library. The panel discussion will feature general surgeon Gregory D’Augustine, M.D.; breast cancer survivors Alan Stone and Michael Murphy; and breast cancer survivor supporting spouse Mitch Sperry. Additional activities in observation of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month include:

* Lighting the Auburn City Building in pink during October.

* Book displays for adults and children at the Auburn and Lewiston public libraries. Auburn’s adult display will include “Saving Jack: A Man’s Struggle With Breast Cancer” by Jack Willis.

* Businesses, including Mama Shukri Plaza, 229 Lisbon St., Lewiston, will have pink ribbon window displays to promote breast cancer awareness.

* Lewiston and Auburn residents are encouraged to install pink lights outside their homes.

* Auburn Girl Scouts will have a “pink” service project.
