LEWISTON — A Bates College student from Eliot was seriously injured over the weekend after falling down a stairwell.

Troy J. Pappas, 18, a first-year student at the college was taken to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment after he fell down a stairwell Saturday at about 9:30 p.m. in Parker Hall, an on-campus student residence, college spokesman Roland Adams said Monday.

A spokeswoman at CMMC declined to release Pappas’ condition due to a request by the family.

A Bates student who was with Pappas on Saturday night called the Bates office of Security and Campus Safety, Adams said.

Bates security officers and Bates Emergency Medical Services responded to the call. Pappas was taken by ambulance to the nearby hospital, Adams said.

Pappas’ parents were notified after the incident and have been at the hospital since shortly after the incident occurred, Adams said. Extended members of his family also have been at the hospital along with members of the Bates community.

Bates College President Clayton Spencer wrote an e-mail to the campus community Sunday afternoon saying: “I would like to express my deepest concern and support for Troy and his family, and I hope that you will join all of us in the Bates community as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Pappas is a wide receiver on the Bates football team. His studies at the college are focused on science and math, Adams said.

A graduate of Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Pappas was captain and quarterback of that football team and was a member of that school’s varsity baseball and basketball teams. He earned top honors at Marshwood and was a member of the math team and student government.

Bates staff members have been providing counseling and emotional support to Pappas’ friends and other students since the incident, Adams said, including professional services, if needed.

The college plans to update the Bates community about significant changes in Pappas’ condition.

Adams declined to comment further on the incident.
