FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue High School Spanish students and Foster Technology CNA students will experience community service at a global level on their surgical mission trip to Nicaragua Nov. 8 to 18.

Students will travel with their CNA instructor, Laurie Hiscock, and with other local nurses and teachers who have volunteered to participate. The group will meet with other healthcare professionals from around the country and participate in a surgical mission week hosted by Amigos for Christ a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, Ga.

The goal for the trip is to introduce students to life and healthcare in a third world country. They will be involved in healthcare clinics, surgeries and other community projects that Amigos for Christ supports.

“Our hope is that students will come home with a spirit and drive to be active volunteers in their own local communities,” said Hiscock. “ I know this sounds cliché but it will be a life-changing experience for them, and an opportunity for personal growth.”

Melanie Lecours, another nurse traveling with the group, said, “We need the support of the community; this is a big endeavor and the students have been working hard every free minute to raise money.”

Community members who would like to donate in support of the students may send a check to Hiscock at Foster Technology Center, 374 High St., Farmington Maine 04938, or contact her at 491-1587.

Hiscock said when they return they will have many stories to share with the community.

There will be a fundraising benefit dance and silent auction for the students at the Farmington Elks Lodge from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 5, with music by Dreamin Big. Ticket price is $10, purchased in advance. Call Hiscock or go to local markets, Ron’s, Madore’s or Douin’s.
