PARIS — A Peru man accused of stealing $20,000 in cash from a Rumford convenience store was arrested Friday morning on burglary and theft charges.

Anthony R. Scott, 30, of 590 Auburn Road, is being held on charges of burglary, theft and violation of bail condition. His bail is set at $20,000.

According to an affidavit by Capt. Daniel Garbarini of the Rumford Police Department, Ralph’s Store owner Jim Barnett reported that someone broke into his store on Sept. 27 and stole more than $20,000 he was keeping in a box in his office.

Garbarini wrote that the burglar pushed an air conditioning unit into the building to gain access. In the following days, Garbarini heard from several people that Scott had been flashing a large amount of cash.

According to the affidavit, Scott bought a four-wheeler and a car for his mother following the burglary.

Several people told Garbarini that Scott was keeping the money at an apartment in Mexico where he was staying. Police got a search warrant and found sneakers that matched footprints found at the burglarized store.

Scott was found and arrested about four days later. According to the affidavit, Scott has an extensive felony record for burglary and theft.

Scott is set to appear in Oxford County Superior Court on Jan. 8.
