Though grave fears were held for the recovery of Miss Ruth Rogers, who was found in an unconscious condition due to inhaling gas fumes Saturday afternoon, she is now much improved and shows little effect of her narrow escape. Returning from a shopping trip at about five o’clock, Mrs. Edith Campbell, landlady, upon going into her home in Pollister Block, Court Street, Auburn, smelled gas. She began to investigate and found its source. She went in to find the young occupant of the room lying in an unconscious condition on the floor. The doctors worked for a long time toward reviving the young lady and finally saw that their work was successful, though it had been a hard fight.

“ I think it is about time to tell him to mind his own business,” Lionel Goulet, Lewiston Zoning Board of Appeals member, said last night at a meeting. Subject for Goulet’s attack was Lewiston Fire Chief Roland G. Dumais, who was not present. Goulet accused the fire chief of “running the zoning board.” A Lewiston business was given a permit to operate by the zoning board but then ordered to close down by Fire Department officials and told to install a sprinkler system. Goulet said the business had complied with a list of fire regulations provided and had been approved for business by a state fire inspector. Building Inspector Charles A. Buteau said, “There’s only one thing I want to know, who’s running the building code, the Zoning Board or the Fire Department?”

More than 30 parents, concerned about the first grade overcrowding problem, filled the Sabattus Elementary School library for Wednesday’s School Committee meeting. Patricia Gaudreau addressed the board as spokeswoman for the parents, asking the committee to hire an additional teacher for the first grade. Gaudreau said a new teacher would be preferable to hiring classroom aides because of teachers’ specialized training. Principal Betsy McElvein raised the problem of first-grade class sizes with the School Committee in September. At that time she reported that the three first-grade classes exceed the state maximum of 25 students per room. There are 27 students in each room.
