BRUNSWICK— Dorothy Maude Kenopensky, 92, of 27 Grove St., Lisbon Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 4, at Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick.

She was born in Greenville, S.C., on Feb. 21, 1920, the daughter of Benjamin Kilpatrick and Effie Campbell. She was educated in local schools and attended Frank Evans High School in Spartenberg, S.C.

On Dec. 22, 1940, she married Michael A. Kenopensky in Lexington, S.C. When he became a prisoner of war she moved to Lisbon Falls to be near his family.

She went to work for M. Grumbacher Inc. in Brunswick on Aug. 27, 1963, and retired on July 1, 1985, after 22 years. She never missed a day of work because of inclement weather and it was often said that she would get to work when others couldn’t cross the street. After retirement she returned to work part time when the company moved to Lisbon Falls.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as marshall for several years. She attended the United Baptist Church in Lisbon Falls where she was known as the “lady with the hat,” always believing that you should dress up when you went into God’s house. She never missed voting in local and national elections considering it a right, a duty, a privilege and an honor. She would often say “you can’t complain about the outcome if you don’t do your part.”

She enjoyed spending weekends at her cottage in South Harpswell, socializing with all the neighbors and “summer people,” and walking on the beach to see what the tide washed in. She enjoyed crocheting doilies and made many beautiful quilts which she gave to her children, grandchildren and special friends. She enjoyed traveling and had visited all states in the continental United States. Known as a very independent and a strong-willed woman, she continued to live alone, managed all her own household affairs and took pride in her vegetable and flower gardens. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage and her southern upbringing.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta Ward and her husband, Lewis, of South Harpswell and Michele Hlister of Durham; one son, Michael Kenopensky and his wife, Anita, of Bowdoin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Damon of Lisbon Falls and Carol Kilpatrick of Plant City, Fla.

She was predeceased by her husband; her son-in-law, Robert Hlister; her grandson, Lewis Ward Jr.; her great-grandson, Cameron Van Vlack; her sister Gertie; and her five brothers, Van, Martin, Albert, Alfred and William.
