1926 – 2012

TOGUS — Clifton “Clif” Harry Dow Jr., 86, of Sabattus, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Hospice Unit of the VA Center, after fighting a battle with cancer.

Clif was born in Lewiston on May 13, 1926, the son of Clifton H. Dow, Sr. and Emma Louise (Lombard) Dow and grew up in the Lewiston area. He entered the Army in 1944 and served in the 3rd Army Tank Battalion in Europe until the end of the European campaign. He returned home and married Marylyne Foisy on Aug. 24, 1947.

Clif worked at Pineland Lumber and the Overhead Door Co., and retired from the carpentry shop at Bates College. He was known for his ability to craft fine furniture. He was infamous for creating masterpieces out of “scrap” wood such as wood pallets, which he retrieved from many places. His favorite pastime was garage sales, searching for treasures, meeting acquaintances, buying, selling and mostly collecting tools of all sorts, types and sizes.

Clif always had a little poem or song for every occasion and situation. Singing off key, you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth and he always had you laughing.

He is survived by 14 nieces and nephews; and a large number of great-nieces and nephews.
