NORWAY — The Oxford Hills Relay For Life is recruiting committee members for the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event.

“This is the 10th anniversary for Relay For Life of Oxford Hills,” publicity Chairman Heather Bossie said. “Last year we had over 120 participants registered, and we had more register on the day of the event.”

The relay is set for June 15-16, 2013, at the Gouin Athletic Complex on Alpine Street in Paris.

Participants create teams who do overnight community fundraising walks or camp out around a track. There are also activities and games for the entire community.

The now worldwide event began in May 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a surgeon who wanted to raise money for his local American Cancer Society office, walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash. He raised $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The Relay For Life movement has raised more than $4 billion to fight cancer, according to the American Cancer Society Web page.

Bossie said the Oxford Hills Relay For Life is looking for “energetic, dedicated and excited members of our community” to serve on a planning committee. The first committee meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Norway Town Office.

“We are very excited about what we can accomplish to help further research for better treatment and a cure for cancer,” she said.

Anyone interested in participating or learning more about joining the committee is welcome to attend, Bossie said.
