BETHEL — A local man who surrendered to police in a burglary and assault case was released from jail Tuesday on $1,000 cash bail.

Arthur P. Bragdon Jr., 47, was arrested on charges of burglary, aggravated assault and criminal mischief Friday after breaking down a man’s door and beating him. The victim’s orbital bone around his eyes was fractured, according to a report by Deputy Sullivan Rizzo of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Rizzo’s report, after the assault Bragdon called the Oxford County Regional Communications Center in Paris and said he wanted to turn himself in.

“’I did it,’” he reportedly told Rizzo. “’I won’t give you a hard time. I lost my mind earlier. I’m sorry, it’s not like me.’” He told Rizzo the man was dating his wife, from whom he was separated.

The victim was driven to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway. After booking Bragdon, Rizzo went to the hospital to meet the victim. The man had two black eyes which were closed due to the swelling, Rizzo wrote. Hospital staff confirmed his orbital bone was fractured.

The victim said Bragdon broke down his door and he tried to protect himself with a bar stool, but Bragdon knocked it out of the way and began punching him in the face, according to the report.

Bragdon isn’t allowed contact with the man or with his wife. He is to be arraigned in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris on Jan. 8.
