As the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) prepares for a second attempt at their 2012 season finale this Sunday at Oxford Plains Speedway, three veterans on the local short track scene are locked in championship fights within their respective divisions.
Second generation driver Cassius Clark of Farmington (Super Late Model); longtime Oxford veteran Carey Martin of Denmark (Sportsman); and respected Hebron native Alan Wilson (Mods) are in the running for 2012 titles after strong performances all summer long.
Clark led the Super Late Model points for much of the season until bad luck at the most recent event in North Woodstock, N.H., allowed Travis Benjamin to take over the top spot. Benjamin, of Morrill, earned his first career PASS North victory earlier this year. In the PASS 150 at Oxford in July, he finished 14th while Clark drove into Victory Lane. Benjamin’s lead is a scant eight markers with one race remaining.
“We had a slow start to the season, so it was a tough road to get that points lead,” Clark said. “I’ve never been much of a points racer to begin with, but obviously with a chance for a title this Sunday we need to avoid getting caught up in any kind of trouble. “
Always looking for any available edge over the competition, Clark is trying to gain speed any way he can.
“We’re taking a new setup to practice day Saturday, one that worked pretty well in a recent test session. A win is the best I can do to overtake Travis and secure a title, so that is definitely our goal for Sunday.”
Wilson has driven just about every type of car that has ever competed in the northeast, including Super Late Models and now the open-wheel Modified machines. Wilson won the PASS Modified feature on Friday night of this year’s TD Bank 250 weekend; Wilson now trails Andy Shaw of Center Conway, N.H., by 30 points as the circuit returns to his home track.
“I think Andy would have to have a little bad luck and I’d have to win the feature,” Wilson said with a realistic approach. “For some reason, I seem to run a lot better in the summer at Oxford than in the fall. Regardless of how it turns out, this division is all about fun. We’re actually preparing the Super Late Model this week, so I’ll be doing double duty at Oxford. Last year that didn’t quite pan out, but we’re hoping for a little better luck on Sunday.”
Martin is leading the Sportsman division point standings by nine over Craig Smith as he strives for a third title on the PASS tour. Driving his familiar blue and white No. 18 entry, Martin is about as laid-back as anybody in the pit area. He’ll roll into Oxford with a smile and years of experience in his pocket.
Qualifying races for Sunday’s PASS North finale take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. Oxford Plains Speedway will close the curtain on its own season with a Mini Stock 100 and Acceleration Series Showdown program on Saturday. That full card of racing gets under way at 3 p.m.
