PARIS — The town’s Policy and Procedure Committee is on break until the Board of Selectmen gives it a clear charge, committee member Anne Stanley said at Tuesday’s meeting.

The board was set to discuss the committee’s charge but tabled the issue because committee Chairman John Richardson wasn’t at the meeting.

Chairman Sam Elliot said he was “discouraged and disappointed” by the choice. He said the charge could be more clear but said the committee’s work was important. “This hasn’t been an issue until recently,” he said.

“It doesn’t sound like it’s a huge problem to the committee,” Elliot added.

Stanley said the committee has called off one meeting since a Sept. 24 Board of Selectmen meeting at which Elliot criticized a draft revision of the town’s Traffic Ordinance Restricting Vehicle Weight. Elliot said the committee should have consulted local business owners who would be affected by the ordinance.

Members of the Policy and Procedure Committee argued at that time that they didn’t have the authority to make changes to the content of town ordinances. The board agreed to discuss the committee’s charge at a later meeting.

According to the minutes of a 2008 meeting of the Policy and Procedure Committee, former Town Manager Sharon Jackson said the committee’s role was to “review and update existing policies, procedures, ordinances as needed and draft new as recommended by selectmen.”

Selectmen also on Tuesday:

* Agreed to close the Town Office on Nov. 6 so clerks could help with the election at the Paris Fire Station.

* Accepted the resignation of office clerk and Assistant Code Enforcement Officer Lynne Chammings. Chammings was set to take on code enforcement duties after current CEO Gerald Samson leaves. Samson has agreed to stay on until April 2013 while the town looks for a replacement.

* Set a special meeting for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, to develop a contract for the new town manager.
