ANSWER: The charity St. Jude’s Ranch for Children is indeed still accepting those cards as well as selling the resulting product. You can read all about the program at http://tinyurl.com/8ab2tsg

Some of the rules are:

* All types of greeting cards, including Christmas are used.

* Only the card front can be used (please check to be sure the back side is clear of any writing, etc.)

* They cannot accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting cards.

* The 5- by 7-inch size or smaller is preferred.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any organizations or anyone out there that have any use for empty prescription bottles (labels removed)? My granddaughter used them for her first-grade students to hold crayons, etc., with a sticker and the child’s name on each.

She is not teaching this year, so has no need of them. It seems they could be used for some purpose. — Richard Langelier, ralange@myfairpoint.net

ANSWER: This is a good example of reduce, reuse, recycle in action. When the kids are done with them, the bottles can be recycled.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We need help finding 6- to 12-year-old boys with mild behavior and attention issues for a study at Bates College to explore stress hormones and certain kinds of anger.

Children will be asked to provide a saliva sample and will be observed playing several games. The study will be conducted at Bates College and will take 45 minutes.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: As other readers noted in the Oct. 10 corrections to the Sept. 29 column, the Strand Theater was located on Main Street in Lewiston. The Priscilla Theater on Pine Street was a very small neighborhood theater.

Does anyone remember the Auburn Theater that was located on the corner of Court Street and Mechanics Row in Auburn?

I was an usher there in 1950 and 1951. In addition to the movies, it featured five acts of vaudeville every weekend. After the Auburn Theater closed, it was taken down and reassembled and is still there being used to this day.

Peter Allen Lumber Co. did the disassembling and reassembled it at their lumber yard on Poland Road in Auburn. The lumber yard is now owned by Hammond Lumber Co. Interestingly they call it the theater warehouse. The theater is basically across from the entrance to the Hammond Lumber showroom and is conspicuous by its odd-shaped roof. — Earle in Greene

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The person who commented on the cryptograms in the Sept. 24 column and others might be interested to know that the Paris Public Library holds a Cryptogram Challenge on the last Monday of the month.

Anyone who enjoys solving cryptograms should consider joining us. Don’t let the word “challenge” scare you. We do this strictly for fun; you don’t need to be an expert solver. DEAR SUN SPOTS: My family has a history in Lewiston. I suspect there are some left, and I am trying to find them.

My father, Eugene Supovitz, spent his early childhood in Lewiston where his parents, Charles and Betty Supovitz, owned a store. Charles’ father was Moshe “Morris” Supovitz.
