AUGUSTA — Jean H. Bodwell, 86, died Oct. 8, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center. Jean had resided at Hillside Terrace in Hallowell since her husband, Neal, died in 2011.

Jean was born in Milford, Jan. 16, 1926, the only child of Gilmore Lewis Harris and Virginia Holmes Harris. She spent her early childhood with her maternal grandparents, Frank Holmes and Mabel Folsom Holmes of Olamon.

In 1930, Jean went to Stamford, Conn., with her mother to start school, where her mother was a teacher. Jean came back to Augusta and stayed with her aunt and uncle, Helen and Waldo Hill. She graduated from Cony High in 1943, and attended Gates Business College. She was employed by the State of Maine.

On Nov. 30, 1946, Jean married Neal Bodwell. They had a very happy life together.

She worked for the State of Maine part time, while raising their son Russell, and retired in 1986.

Neal and Jean went to Florida, for a vacation and liked it so well that they stayed for 19 years. Neal got homesick for Maine and his brothers. So in 2007, they came back and bought a mobile home in Randolph. They really enjoyed being back.

Jean is survived by her son, Russell of Thomaston; three cousins, Janet Musk of Augusta, George W. Hill of Dayton and Ann Wasgatt of Roseville, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Paul Bodwell and wife, Sally, of Bethel and James Bodwell of Andover; a niece; and several nephews.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Neal; and recently by her sister-in-law, Elizabeth.
