Lewiston’s Emilie Cloutier of Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., has been named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s singles tennis first team.

Playing No. 1 singles for most of the season, Cloutier posted a mark of 9-3, including 6-1 in conference play.

She was even more dominant with senior doubles partner Gina Pinciaro, winning 10 of their 11 matches. They were a second-team all-conference selection.

It is the second straight first-team singles recognition for the junior.

ON THE BOARD

Sophomore Tyler Hartman of Lewiston had an assist Saturday for the University of Southern Maine men’s soccer team in a wild 4-3 loss to UMass-Dartmouth.

Hartman set up Ben Afif’s first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2 in the first half. The Huskies (4-10) eventually fell in overtime.

It was Hartman’s first point of the season. Hartman, a fullback, has appeared in 12 games, starting all but one.

HOLDING COURT

Courtney Aldrich of Lewiston split her two matches for the Southern Maine women’s tennis team in Saturday’s 5-4 loss to Worcester State.

Aldrich and doubles partner Molly Morrill posted an 8-2 win. In singles, Aldrich took Megan Shepard to a third set before falling 6-1.

RACE READY

Kevin Desmond of Monmouth helped USM’s men’s cross country team to a ninth-place finish out of 40 teams in the James Early Invitational at Westfield, Mass.

Desmond, a sophomore, covered the course at Stanley Park in 28:09.54. He was 76th in a field of 429.

He backed it up Saturday by finishing 43rd in the State of Maine Championships on the Huskies’ hoem course. Nationally-ranked Bates won the overall title. Southern Maine was fourth.

NEW ENDEAVOR

Carrabassett Valley Academy and Bates College graduate Ben Manter has been named an assistant alpine ski coach at Colby.

Manter was an All-American at Bates, finishing 10th in the slalom in 2010. He was the third men’s skier in Bates history to earn that distinction.

The Vassalboro native graduated in 2011 with a degree in biology. He was a two-year captain and started every race in his collegiate career.
