Another Saturday, another brisk, windy day at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

Conditions were such that only one player in the entire schoolboy and schoolgirl individual championship field was able to break par.

Unfortunately for Zach DeBlois of Saint Dominic Academy, that player was in his bracket.

Sam Grindle of Deer Isle-Stonington registered a sensational 68 to capture the Class C title on Natanis’ Arrowhead course.

“When they announced his score, all the Class A and B players were like, ‘Oh my God.’ Nobody imagined that anybody would break par today,” St. Dom’s coach Kevin Cullen said.

Grindle is the first player from his school, which competes in Class D in every other sport, to win an individual golf crown.

No other player in any class shot a lower round Saturday than DeBlois. But the Saints’ senior was forced to settle for a tie for second with Mark Corella of Ashland at 74.

DeBlois shot the same score on the same layout one week ago, leading St. Dom’s to its fourth state team title in six years.

“I thought he played a lot better (Saturday),” Cullen said. “The conditions were much worse than last week. When I checked AccuWeather at 2 o’clock, about an hour before they finished, it said 43 degrees and winds at 15 miles per hour.”

Grindle and DeBlois were paired up, something that isn’t unusual. The two are close friends and have been Maine teammates in various regional tournaments.

The upper hand immediately went to Grindle, who started with a 25-foot birdie, a 10-foot birdie and a 20-foot par on his first three holes.

“Zach counted his putts and said that he only had 24 all day,” Cullen said. “And the short game is everything on a day like today.”

DeBlois was able to keep it close for a while, though.

Their group started on the back nine. Grindle had a blistering 32 at the turn. DeBlois shot 36.

Facing a 510-yard par-5 with a water hazard 250 yards from the tee, DeBlois then made a fateful decision to try and clear the hurdle.

DeBlois ended up in the water. After his next shot found another hazard, the Saints’ standout scrambled for a double bogey.

“Yeah, I did my job, Cullen joked. “He took my advice and it cost him. I asked him how he was hitting his driver and he said, ‘Pretty well.’ It flew in. He was maybe five yards away from having an iron into the green.”

DeBlois and Grindle are both seniors.

“Next week Zach is helping the middle school players prepare for their state championship, and then right after that he begins dryland training for hockey,” Cullen said. “There’s never a let-up for him.”

There is one more schooboy event for DeBlois.

He will compete in the AJGA Northeast regionals in New York in three weeks.

“It’s basically the top 144 junior players in the country,” Cullen said. “They call it the Northeast regional, but there will be players from California, Arizona and Texas there.”

True to St. Dom’s depth, all five of its scoring players in the team competition qualified for the state field of 31.

Mike Richard shot 81 to finish in a four-way tie for seventh. Mitch Lorenz and John Marcous each carded a 90. Andrew Marcous shot 92.

Taylor Morang of Winthrop was fifth in Class C with a 78. The Ramblers’ Anthony Owens checked in at 87.

Robert Vickerson of Monmouth notched 90 and Buckfield’s Jonah Williams finished with 97.

Mike Caron of Gorham (Class A) and Reese MacFarlene of Cape Elizabeth (Class B) also won championships. Those divisions competed on the Tomahawk course at Natanis.

Caron fired a 75, one shot in front of Brunswick’s Brad Smith. MacFarlene’s 74 topped Red Desmith of Yarmouth and Luke Ruffing of Maranacook by three strokes.

Alice Hwang of Bangor won the girls’ title with an 84, one shot ahead of Yarmouth’s Monica Austin.

In the Class A boys’ competition, Cameron Marquis led the local contingent with 85, tying for 16th. Chris Burns (91) and Matt Michaud (92) competed for Oxford Hills. Cooper Easter (100) and Brian Crane (109) represented Edward Little.

Brianna Morris of Oxford Hills placed 17th in the girls’ field with 99. Poland’s Samantha Futch shot 115.
