PORTLAND (AP) — Portland City Council has unanimously endorsed the same-sex marriage proposal on Maine’s Nov. 6 ballot.

With its vote Monday night, Portland joins Bangor, whose council last week went on record in support of the proposal to allow same-sex couples to receive a marriage license.

Portland’s resolution was introduced by Councilor Nick Mavodones. The resolution says that in addition to allowing same-sex couples to receive a marriage license, Question 1 also protects religious freedom.

On Monday, a Los Angeles-based organization called LegalizeLove.com urged President Barack Obama to speak in support of same-sex marriage in Maine and three other states that have ballot initiatives on it next month.
