MEXICO — Matthew Kaubris, chief executive officer and president of Oxford Federal Credit Union, was recently appointed by Gov. Paul LePage to the Kim Wallace Adaptive Equipment Loan Program Fund Board.
Kaubris was sworn in Friday by Rep. Sheryl J. Briggs, D-Mexico, Kim Davis, credit union spokeswoman, said Monday in a news release.
The loan program, also known as the mPower loan fund, was created when Kim Wallace suffered a spinal cord injury in 1979 and became a quadriplegic. The event launched his career as an advocate for disability rights, Davis said.
Wallace was a pioneer and the driving force to start the loan program, after he saw the difficulties people faced in getting equipment and home modifications.
The mPower loan fund has been supported by two bond issues passed by Maine voters. This makes mPower the only citizen-funded type loan program in the country, Davis said.
Loans totaling more than $8 million have been made to individuals and businesses in the past 20 years, she said.
Wallace continued to work for Maine’s disabled population until his death in July 2000. mPower loans are made at low interest rates with longer repayment schedules, reducing monthly payments, Davis said.
