BETHEL — A local food group will host an event at Telstar Regional High School on Saturday to get people thinking about the food they’re eating.
The Local Food Connection is hosting “Do You Eat? Eating is for everyone,” an interactive event from 5 to 7 p.m. It is open to the public.
The event will begin with participants sharing their experiences with local foods. Amy Scott, one of the organizers of the Local Food Connection, said a series of presentations will educate interested community members about how to make the food system of Bethel more sustainable.
“We’re showing a short video titled ‘What’s On Your Plate,'” Scott said. “It’s a creative description of what food systems are made up of.”
Scott added that a former employee of Healthy Acadia is expected to speak about her experience in working with communities on local foods and the impact it had on health care, the environment and education.
The event will have informative posters set up for community members to read, as well as a free buffet-style dinner featuring local foods. The dinner will also be a chance for people to talk with Anna Sysko, the cook, about what she put in the food and where the ingredients come from.
“Anna sourced all the food locally, or as much of it as possible,” Scott said. “If she couldn’t get it locally, she made sure the food was at least from Maine.” He said the dinner would feature “bread, soup, salad and something sweet.”
Scott also said the Local Food Connection will be sharing the results of a community survey released a month ago. The survey contains questions regarding local food buying habits of participants. Scott hopes that the survey gives “a better understanding of what people are interested in for local foods.”
According to Scott, the Local Food Connection is looking to get people interested in local foods and understand why it’s important to make it available to more people.
“We want to let people know that the Local Food Connection is here, that we exist,” Scott said.
The video ‘What’s On Your Plate,’ created by students from the University of Vermont, can be found on the website YouTube.
