1924 – 2012

ORONO — Florice L. Laferriere, 88, of Dexter and Peru, died Oct. 18, surrounded by her family, at an Orono nursing home.

She was born Jan. 22, 1924, in Dexter, a daughter of Clifford and Doreldia (Curty) Gilbert. She graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Class of 1942. In 1945, she graduated from the Sisters of Charity Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse.

On May 3, 1947, she married Lionel Laferriere and they enjoyed 56 years together. Florice was employed for many years at Plummer Memorial Hospital in Dexter, completing the last three-and-a-half years of her nursing career as director of nursing at Dexter Health Care.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sunshine Club and the Dexter Nurses Guild. Florice enjoyed the out-of-doors and spent many fun times fly-fishing with Lionel and spending time at camp with the family.

She was a communicant of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, where she was active in the music ministry, playing as organist for many years. After her husband died, she moved to Dixfield to be near her caring family.

She is survived by their five children, a son, Allen and wife, Cherie Laferriere, of Hagerstown, Md.; four daughters, Eileen and husband, Tim Schoonmaker, of Stetson, Lana Robichaud of Bangor, Elizabeth and husband, Lauren Hebert, of Dixfield, and Margaret and husband, John Houghton, of Fort Fairfield; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a large family of nieces and nephews, including two special nephews, David and wife, Nancy Gilbert, of Palmyra, and Danny and wife, Sherry Gilbert of Hartland; cousins and in-laws.

In addition to her husband; she was predeceased by a brother and his wife, Norman and Lucille Gilbert; a grandson, Scottie Lord; and a great-grandson, Jacob LePage.
