LEWISTON — He was a professional boxer … a World War I flying ace … a jazz musician … and he did some spying.

Eugene Bullard was a remarkable African-American and patriot. His life story is told in the play, “Wings of Courage,” which will be presented by Mad River Theater Works Company and L/A Arts on Sunday, Nov. 4.

An original play by Mad River, “Wings of Courage” uses storytelling, music and drama to depict how Bullard’s determination and perseverance helped him overcome discrimination throughout his life. It is an uplifting tale of vision and hope.

Born in Columbus, Ga., Bullard traveled the world. He joined the French Foreign Legion after being denied a position in the U.S. Army. He rose through the ranks as a member of the Lafayette Escadrille, the branch of the French air force in World War I made up of American volunteer pilots.

When the Escadrille was incorporated into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1917, Bullard wasn’t allowed to take his place alongside other American heroes of his day because of his race.

Bullard gained fame as a bandleader in Paris during the 1920s. He spoke German and agreed to spy on German agents who visited his nightclub in Paris.

“Wings of Courage” will be presented at 3 p.m. at Lewiston Middle School Auditorium, 75 Central Ave. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children 14 and younger. Call 782-7228 or visit www.laarts.org. The performance is part of L/A Arts’ Imagination Series.
