FARMINGTON — The Gold LEAF Institute Senior College recently held its kick off meeting to begin the fall/winter semester. Approximately 80 people attended, including the new president of the University of Maine at Farmington, Dr. Kathryn Foster.

When the Gold LEAF president asked Dr. Foster to speak, she praised the course offerings, wishing she had time in her busy schedule to take some of the classes, and spoke of the continued support of Gold LEAF by the university. At the conclusion of her remarks, she graciously accepted the gift of a Gold LEAF coffee mug.

The meeting continued with members hearing about this semester’s 24 courses and activities that will take place between Oct. 19 and March 8. The curriculum chairperson, Susan Wahlstrom, told the audience that this could be the largest number of course offerings ever for the Gold LEAF Institute.

Most of the presenters were in attendance, and were able to give synopses of, and answer questions about the course offerings, which ranged from writing to reading and discussion, from computer usage to exercise, and from handcrafts to saving electricity. The course presenters this term include Gold LEAF members sharing about a favorite hobby or vocation, UMF faculty and staff, and professional writers and poets teaching others their craft.

Registrations are open now for the fall/winter term. The full list of course offerings is on the web at goldleaf.wikispaces.com. Call 778-7063 or email goldleaf@maine.edu to get a course booklet, registration instructions or general information.
