LEWISTON — Douglas “Doug” N. Pettengill Sr., 76, Lewiston, went peacefully home to the Lord on Oct. 22. He was a former resident of Monmouth.
He was born in Portland, Aug. 3, 1936, to Violet I. (Patt) Pettengill and Carl Alton Pettengill Sr., formerly of Scarborough. Doug was the youngest of five children, Carl Jr. of Freeport, Ada and Bruce (predeceased) and Betty of South Portland.
Doug recently celebrated his 24th wedding anniversary with his wife, Hermance (Joan Morin) Pettengill of Lewiston. He was educated in South Portland schools and proudly served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957. In addition, he was a member of the Army National Guard from 1958 to 1963. Doug’s occupation included being a firefighter in the 1960s for the Portland fire department, textile manufacturing, but primarily operating heavy construction equipment and truck driving for Harry C. Crooker Co. of Topsham, for three decades.
He was a member of the American Legion and served as an officer at Posts 153 and 135 and was past commander of Post 40 in Winthrop. He was a member of Kennebec Color Guard and Pathway Vineyard Church of Lewiston.
Doug loved the outdoors, enjoying various sports: golfing, fishing, snowmobiling, gardening and walking his Beagle. He loved jazz music and hid his tender heart, his larger than life “John Wayne” demeanor, his gift of storytelling and prickly disposition, which poorly hid his tender heart.
He took honor in his country and served in his later years by conducting military funerals for more than a decade.
Doug’s family members include his son, Douglas Jr. of New Auburn; daughter, Barbara “Marie” (Pettengill) Gabri, wife of Joseph M. Gabri of Monmouth; six wonderful stepchildren, Mrs. Diane Clark and husband, Dan, of Lewiston, Mrs. Pauline Flores and Eduardo, of Poland, Carmen Morin of Leeds, Rachel Morin of Lewiston, Robert Morin and wife, Diane, of Poland and Maurice “Moe” Morin and wife, Lisa, of Auburn; grandchildren, Capen and Katie Gabri, Greene, Krysten Gabri, Monmouth, Joseph II and Janet Gabri, Lewiston, Stacey, Robert and Justin Morin, Lewiston, Alta and Jason Jack, Oxford, Paul Pelletier, Lewiston, Katrice Arunze, New York, Nathan and Dustin Morin, Poland, Corey and Tyler Morin, Auburn, Paul and Amanda, formerly of Turner; and several great-grandchildren.
