PORTLAND — Portland Ovations will bring young Haitian singer-songwriter and guitarist BelO and his five-piece band to the University of Southern Maine on Sunday, Nov. 4.
The concert, part of Center StageSM, will be at 7 p.m. in Hannaford Hall.
Jean Murat Belony (BelO) was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, a city near Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, and started singing at a young age. A socially conscious folk singer, he sings ballads and other songs channeling his deep and diverse Afro-Caribbean roots with the beats of reggae and the soul of R&B.
Active in humanitarian efforts to rebuild Haiti, BelO’s lyrics tackle hard-hitting themes focused on the destiny of Haiti’s children. The award-winning performer has done much to help rebuild his country after the devastating earthquake of 2010.
Prior to BelO’s performanc, renowned Haitian storyteller and artist Charlot Lucien will discuss Haiti’s cultural, historical and social landscape. The talk, “Haiti’s Other Side: Memories and Perspectives,” will be at 6 p.m., also at Hannaford Hall.
Concert tickets are $34, with a limited amount of $10 student tickets available. Call 842-0800, log on to www.portlandovations.org or visit the PortTIX box office at Merrill Auditorium.
