The photo of Illinois pro-life demonstrators in the Oct. 21 Sun Journal reminded me of the Oct. 7 Maine Pro-Life Chain demonstration on the Longley Bridge in Lewiston. This was one of several such demonstrations across Maine on that day.

I stood in the cold wind with other men and women who demonstrated their opposition to abortion and euthanasia by holding signs that stated these points. One sign noted a contact for any person having a problem with an unwanted unborn child. There were no speeches and there was no shouting.

Pro-life demonstrators quietly prayed the rosary and held their signs up presenting their pro-life view. They did not respond to angry shouts from passing cars by those who do not revere life.

I was impressed that this demonstration of the Maine Pro-Life group was peaceful since I lived through the ’60s and ’70s when anger overflowed the country with sometimes violent confrontations against injustices.

It was about human dignity and reverence for life — a peaceful, prayerful demonstration — by the Maine Pro-Life Chain in Lewiston, which is truly pro-life. This had its foundation in the religious.
