LEWISTON — The name may have changed, but voters in Wards 4, 5 and 7 will still go to the same location to cast their ballots Nov. 6.

City Clerk Kathy Montejo said she had fielded a few confused phone calls from voters wondering why they are being sent to vote at Longley Elementary School at 145 Birch St., instead of the Multi-Purpose Center.

Wards 4, 5 and 7 residents have voted at the Multi-Purpose Center, at the same address, for years.

“I don’t know if many people have seen the new sign out front,” she said, which says Longley Elementary School. “There’s a new layout inside. It doesn’t even look like the same Multi-Purpose Center anymore. But they still vote in the same place.”

Longley School and the Multi-Purpose Center shared the building until this past summer. The school occupied one portion, with adult education classes and meeting space for the city’s senior citizen groups taking up the rest. That included the gymnasium, the polling place for the three wards.

Councilors agreed last year to relocate the senior programs to the Lewiston Armory, letting Longley School take over all of the space at 145 Birch St.

School officials say the school system is facing a growth spurt, adding 100 students per year for the foreseeable future.

“Internally, the layout has changed, but the gym is in the same place,” Montejo said. “We may have to put up signs directing people where to go once they come inside. But they still go to the same address and they still vote in the gymnasium.”

None of the city’s polling places have changed.

Residents in Wards 1 and 3 vote at the Lewiston Memorial Armory, 65 Central Ave.; Ward 2 at Montello School, 407 East Ave.; Ward 6 at the Elks Lodge, 1675 Lisbon Road.

All of the city’s polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6.
