AUBURN — The Central Maine Community College women’s basketball team battled the University of New Brunswick-Saint John back and forth for almost the entire 40 minutes of play before pulling away for an 88-66 win Sunday in the Can-Am Tournament.

CM (2-0) had leads of 18, 20, and 16 points, only to see the Seawolves put together small runs to keep the margin around 10. The CM defense kept bending, but never broke, and finally pulled away with under six minutes to play in the game.

Maggie Sabine of Litchfield had the performance of the tournament by dominating the interior and doing it all on both ends of the floor. Sabine finished with 30 points and 11 rebounds while shooting an outstanding 65 percent from the floor.

Susie French  flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 steals. Danielle McCusker got hot late and finished with 11 points, and Corrie Kinder came off the bench, hitting two big 3-pointers in the second half to finish with 11 points.

Both Ariel McConkey and Maggie McConkey played great all around games, keeping constant defensive pressure on the UNBSJ guards.

CM is back in action next weekend when that play Navy Prep on Saturday and CCRI on Sunday. Both games are being played at SMCC in South Portland.
