DIXFIELD – The Police Department will temporarily restrict access to certain roads Wednesday night for the annual Halloween Walk.
Chief Richard Pickett said barricades will be set up from Weld Street all the way to Ellis Street from 5:30 to 8 p.m. so children can walk safely through town. He said the walk is “a safe, controlled walk for parents and their children to get candy.
“This isn’t for high school kids,” he said. “The older kids can have the rest of the town. The section of town we’re blocking off is so the younger kids can safely reach houses.”
Once the walk starts, no traffic except for emergency vehicles will be allowed through. The chief said he will set up foot patrols near the barricaded roads, as well as a cruiser.
Pickett said a detour will be set up for people who need to get around the barricade. The detour will go up High Street and onto Pine Street to the intersection with Coburn Avenue. By taking a right on Coburn Avenue cars can reach Weld Street again.
The barriers will be lifted at 8 p.m., or whenever the families in the barricaded area run out of candy to hand out.
Pickett also reminded parents to check their children’s candy before they eat it. He also advised wearing something fluorescent so they can be seen more easily after dark and be sure an adult accompanies a child.
