100 years ago, 1912
It seems that for some three months trouble has been brewing in the Polish colony at Lisbon. Hens have unaccountably disappeared and other troubles occurred. Some time ago the hen of John Skavinski trespassed unwittingly on the cabbage plot of Andrew Krol, which is said to have incensed Mrs. Krol that, chasing it to no purpose, she finally hit it with a stick, breaking both legs. This is the first time a woman at Lisbon has been known to hit anything she threw at. That act so incensed Mr. Skavinski that it is said he took a hen owned by Krol and put it in his pen.
50 years ago, 1962
(Editorial) All sorts of undersized witches, goblins, fairy princesses, pumpkinheads and the like will be scurrying around like made this evening, ringing the doorbells of people they know and of total strangers. How much better this sort of activity is for these youngsters than the destructiveness which was so much more common a quarter of a century ago. Halloween has become much more of an evening for the smaller folks, while their teen-age elders enjoy parties for their own age level. There are two suggestions we have for adults. Remember you were a child yourself some years back. Secondly, those of you who may drive tonight shouldn’t forget excited youngsters sometimes become careless, so use an extra amount of caution.

A man who wants to build a 50-mile-long bridge between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. to promote world peach will discuss his plans in a lecture Wednesday at Bates College. Den Corrin of Bryant Pond, coordinator of The Bridge Project, will outline political, ecological and engineering aspects. The propose bridge would stretch across the Bering Strait between western Alaska and eastern Siberia.
